His combination with Shankar Jaikishan and Mohammad Rafi was very grand. SJ composed music in almost 22 films of Shammi Kapoor and the songs of those films are still considered musical gems. Hit songs include “ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar”, “meri yaar shabba khair” sung by Rafi, composed by SJ in Junglee, “tumse accha kaun hai”, “lal chari”, sung by Rafi, composed by SJ in Janwar, “aye gulbadan”, “awaz deke” composed by SJ sung by Rafi in the film Professor, “tumne pukara aur hum chale aye”, “yeh rang badalti duniya me” composed by SJ, sung by Rafi in the film Raj Kumar, “aasmaan se aya farishta”, “raat ke humsafar”, “akele akele kahan ja rahe ho” composed by SJ and sung by Rafi in the film An Evening in Paris, “mai gayun tum so jayo”, “aajkal tere mere pyar ke charche”, “dil ke jharoke me” composed by SJ sung by Rafi in the film Brahmchari, to name a few. She started her career opposite Shammi Kapoor in the film Dil Deke Dekho in 1959. The film did great business with hit songs composed by Usha Khanna including “dil deke dekho” sung by Rafi. After that she acted in musical blockbusters most of which were directed by Nasir Hussain. She was sublime in the film Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai opposite Dev Anand. The songs in the film composed by Shankar Jaikishan like “sau saal pehle”, “yeh ankhe uff yumma”, “teri zulfon se”, “jiya ho” became rich assets of history…..and also ”Sayonara” cannot be forgotton and she will remain in HFM’s history as a Japanese girl, the song sung by Lataji under S-J baton.

SJ’S music can be counted as it started with Lata in Barsat and ended with Lata in 1975 in Sanyasi, the glaring glory which never happened. For Raj Kapoor, SJ founded Mannada and Mukesh and for Shammi and Rajendra Kumar Rafi sahab was very close to th…em…despite this they are the only musicians who used maximum of male female voices in the industry. However again, their using two voices for the same song was most popular and people had to flock cinema hall, which version is best sung. Another use of same voice for two different versions of their songs include Kathputli…bol ri kathputli dori and this songs second version is fabulous. and next example of Mohd Rafi singing in ”boyfriend”….muje apna yaar bana lo phir ho jaaun sansar ka – in a jouous mood in a train in Hariyanavi,,,,and the other sad verson one antara, is most beautiful,a desperate Shammi and soft rhythm and melody. True film music lovers will love to hear the songs of that golden era today also, whether gals and guys, old and young alike.

Happy u PEOPLE joined the grt music stalwarts the HFM ever had and now we do not expect to have further…SJ had 300 solos of Lata in their 2 decades career which wud hv increased, if there was no ego between them a few times, and SJ had to shift …to Mubarak Begam, Suman Kalyanpur, Shardaji for many beautiful songs…and I am more than confident that it was Lata only who culd do justice to their creations. Even Asha was less in their songs…only example, the aalaps they created in their tunes were in Lata songs only, since none other female voice could reach that volume and ‘murkis’ Lata easily handled.

Good Sangeeta, yesterday I heard on ‘Masti’ channel…though hearing many times since long, I was again mesmerized by SJ’s super-duper tune with single and collective use of violins, Lata’s virgin voice, Kumkum simply superb and Rajkumar as usual in his style…Dhumal playing ‘ektara’….This was an Item no. of that time in B&W….SEE THE DIFFERENCE, now Munni and Sheila in semi nudes and next day forgotten….the era was superb and still holds good after more than 50 years…..Main ho gai kisi ki koi mera ho gaya, kya dekha tha tujh mein dil tera hos gaya, ye sochte hi sochte savera ho gaya.(UJALA ho gaya)…Listen to the excellent ‘dholak’ by Dattaram, lovingly called ”Dattu-theka”.

SJ composed most of their tunes for female voices, keeping IN MIND Lataji, their first choice since ‘Barsaat’, which flew her career to stardom and the years followed saw Lataji at her best with Shankar Jaikishan tunes: Ghar aaya mera pardesi to ‘chal sanyasi mandir mein’ i.e. from 1949 till 1975…..MANY MANY HAPPY RETURS OF THE DAY TO MELODY QUEEN ON 28th SEPT….LATAJI AND HER TREASURE LIVE LONG.Her sweetness of voice compelled composers to give the best tunes ever created in Indian film history. Along with Rafi, Lata had the record of singing songs of almost all the composers of the golden age. Everlasting gems of Lata include “tu jaha jahan chalega” composed by Madanmohan, “duniya kare sawal” composed by Roshan, “hume tum mil gaye humdum” composed by Shankar Jaikishan, “phir teri kahani yaad aye” composed by Naushad, “ajare pardesi” composed by Salil Choudhury, “allah tero naam” composed by Jaidev, “piya tose naina lage re” composed by SD Burman, to name a few.

Zindgi ek safar hai suhana—This seems to be when I view this picture of Jaikishan….then why untimely departure…it was God’s will.

They were a foursome to shake the hindi film industry’s music domain, and make their own path by great innovations, experiments in the vast field of singing and orchestration to reign the field eight handedly….hahaha…They were Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, the four pillars to hold the rooftop of melody and rhythm in their own way, which hitherto was impossible to replicate and till date.

Today 12th Sept is the remembrance day of Jaikishan who must be watching from the heaven to his creations and his fans around the globe. Says Hasrat Jaipuri, recalling his first composition for Barsat tuned by Jaikishan–”We were sitting together at a little restaurant near Opera House. He told me of the new tune he’d composed and added that he had also written the first line ‘Chhod gaye balam mujhe hai akela chhod gaye’. He asked me to write the further stanzas. The sheer piognancy of the words inspired me and at once I replied, ‘Toot gaya balam, mera pyar bhara dil toot gaya’.” Hasrat and Jai were the two sides of a coin, as Shankar and Shailendra. However there were times when both sides were changed for the time being and again merged together.

Hasrat more emotionally recalls their Paris visit–”Once we were in Paris together at the Lido, drinking and watching the show. There were a galaxy of beautiful girls wearing star-spangled costumes. I don’t know how but each time they moved, a few stars would fall down. Seeing this Jai remarked, ‘Hasrat miyan, this is beautiful. You must write something’. I did and the song was used in Prince. It was ”Badan pe sitare lapete huye…” wow what was a composition and a great tune in the lines of Parisian music, Jai might have in mind when composing the tunes of ‘An evening in Paris’….’Zara pass aao to chain aa jaye”. …a humble tribute to Jaikishan today…’wahan paidal hi jana hai’…I pray God his soul rest in peace.
